EtherCAT – 實時以太網現場總線
近年來，對生產設備通訊系統的需求越來越大。在過去，使用的差不多都是各種不同的總線，而這些總線現在都被簡單、功能更為強大的系統所取代：EtherCAT。EtherCAT 以以太網為基礎，是機器的核心部分。例如，所有設備的總線周期時間，無論是否分配給 PLC 或 CNC，都是在毫秒范圍內。這表示，任何有關性能、確定性、同步性及傳統總線系統的拓撲結構方面的限制都已成為過去。設計時間大大縮短，的本地智能控制組件由簡單的輸入/輸出所取代，系統能夠根據需要擴展，幾乎沒有限制，也不會降低性能。另外一個好處就是，大多數情況下，以太網已用于主控計算機的連接或機器聯網層面。
概要：無論是那種機器類型需要進行自動化改造，控制硬件都是由工業 PC、EtherCAT（作為高性能總線系統）、本地 I/O 和驅動器 – 其它一切都映射在軟件中。
